5.0. Age and History Data Category

5.1. Using the Architectural Style/Historical Period & Building Age/Construction Date sections

The Architectural Style/Historical Period map is designed to be an easier option for historians to fill in the Building Age/Construction Date section. However, we are looking for the most precise construction date possible therefore, if one is available we would be grateful for this. Where building age is able to be added in it will automatically generate the architectural style, allowing you to fill in two layers at once.

For Building Age/Construction Date data

  • Go to the 'Age and History section'

  • Click on the Architectural Style/Historical Period category

  • Click on any current building outline, marked in blue

  • Choose from the dropdown options, and insert links if applicable

  • Save and the building will colour. It will also automatically colour the Architectural Style/Historical Period layer.

5.2. Using the Cladding, Extensions & Retrofits section

Data on Cladding, Extensions & Retrofits are particularly difficult to collect. This is partly because building footprints are commonly, currently limited in their ability to represent multiple dates. We are working on this at the moment and also on the visualisation of these layers.

  • For each of these three sections click on any building outline

  • Add the date for cladding, extensions & retrofits

  • Save and the building will colour

5.3. Using the Lifespan & Site History section

The Lifespan & Site History section is designed to capture data for all buildings ever built on a single site. This allows us to begin to calculate the average lifespans of buildings and to be able to provide links to historical information about a building's past.

  • Go to the 'Lifespan & Site History' section

  • Click on the building you are interested in

  • The construction year of the building will be automatically entered if age data has been added for the current building. The demolition year will be blank because the building still exists. The lifespan-to-date section will automatically calculate how many years the building has existed for, so far.

  • If any other buildings were built on this site, covering the site completely or partially, click on yes to the next question.

  • This will bring up a new demolished building record. Here you can add the earliest and latest possible construction and demolition years for any previous building.

  • You can also add the rough percentage of the building covering the current site boundary.

  • Add your links to the sources and any historical archives/publications, etc that are relevant.

  • You can add multiple building records can be added for each site.

  • Save your data and the building will colour depending on how many entries for previous buildings existing

  • Go to the 'Age and History section' and open the 'Survival tracking' section

  • Click on the green button to bring up a historical map

  • Click on any current building outline, marked in red

  • Choose from the dropdown options how well historical building footprint matches current building footprint

  • Save and the building will colour

5.6. Using the Building Footprint Issues section

The open building footprint has been generated using EU INSPIRE and Ordnance Survey's OpenMap Local. These building footprints have been generalised, and we are working to improve the precision of specific building shapes and outlines. Based on your personal experience or expertise, you can help refine the building footprints for further enhancement.

  • Navigate to the 'Building Footprint Issues' section.

  • Click on any current building outline, marked in blue.

  • From the dropdown menu, select an option indicating how well the building footprint matches the correct outline.

  • Save your selection, and the building will colour accordingly.
