This is unintended behaviour, and the feature should be blocked.

When I opened the 1.7b1 (after reinstalling the 2.0b1), the first thing that caught my eye is the left column with buttons. I experimented and found that when I right-click on the panel, a checkbox appears with no description. When unchecked, the panel disappears.
