chore(config): begin laying out primitives for programmatically querying schema #17130

Context

Currently, we use a single, massive Ruby script for parsing the generated configuration schema (a JSON Schema document) and generating Cue-compatible output data, which underpins the generation of Vector's configuration reference: https://vector.dev/docs/reference/configuration/.

This Ruby script, while functional, is suboptimal for a number of reasons:

  • Ruby is not the primary language of the Vector project
  • Ruby's performance leaves a little bit to be desired
  • Ruby's type system is effectively non-existent compared to Rust, which makes strict error handling a struggle
  • designed specifically for generating vector.dev-relevant output, with no flexibility or extensibility

Solution

This PR introduces the basis for a future where the output currently being generated by generate-component-docs.rb can be generated entirely by vdev, and is based on a reusable framework for programmatically querying a given schema with Vector-specific enhancements.

New library crate: docs-renderer

This new crate will form the basis of what is eventually the replacement for all of the logic in generate-component-docs.rb: generating the same output, and so on. It is currently a very minimal stub so that we can lay the groundwork, and eventually incorporate it as a dedicated vdev subcommand.

Addition of parser module to vector_config::schema

This new module contains the core logic for parsing a JSON Schema document, and then querying it in specific ways that are only relevant to Vector's configuration schema.

This will generally look like querying the schema for things like all components of a certain type, or a single component, as well as extracting the relevant configuration structure, such as fields, and their types, and the nuance of differing field types (scalars vs objects vs enums, etc), much like we already do in various places (generate-component-docs.rb, etc) but with a Rust-native API for doing so.

This module will also be usable by external, downstream applications -- since it's publicly consumable as a library -- and ensure that we can better control the lifecycle between generating the schema, parsing the schema, and extracting the relevant information from the schema, without the constant rigamarole of having to synchronize logic in multiple projects.

Tangential reworking of ComponentType

I also did a bunch of inconsequential refactoring around sharing common types, like ComponentType, so that crates like vector-config and vector-config-macros weren't duplicating values.

Not that I can foresee, and I did have the thought that it might make more sense just to move it entirely into vdev, but figured I could defer that for the moment.
