Steps to reproduce the behavior in question

How can we dynamically change the retention settings of stream in response to consumer progress. Any Java client API documentation?
We have the use case where we want to control the retention settings of the stream messages based on how slow / fast our consumer is processing the messages from stream. We are using the super streams.

You must use a policy. You can set up the policy from the CLI or with the management UI to experiment. You can then set up the policy from your Java application with an HTTP request or with Hop.
