While that quote is nice, I suggest adding a better "explaination". Like in @cryptoseb's paper:

The primary reason for curtains/blinds/drapes covering our windows in our house is to stop
people from being able to see in. The reason we don’t want them to see in is because we
consider much of what we do inside our homes to be private. Whether that be having dinner at
the table, watching a movie with your kids, or even engaging in intimate or sexual acts with
your partner. None of these things are illegal by any means but even knowing this, we still keep
the curtains and blinds on our windows.

I included the quote above in my paper because while out for coffee and trying to explain the need for privacy to a 60 some year old man, he said to me: I need privacy from people like you, not from the police. To which I responded: "Great! Don't remove your blinds from your windows then. Just set up some cameras and give the police remote access to the feeds. Make sure you keep them on when you and your wife are fighting, she is taking a bath, or you two are having sex on your birthday. They will love that!" His look was priceless. "But... that's not.. but.." Well go ahead, spit it out. The analogy is accurate. If we would openly allow a Government into our personal lives online, why not allow them into our personal lives in our home? Where is this magic line in the sand that distinguishes the two?

@PrivacyCDN That quote is nice, too, but it's too abstract, people can't relate to that.

one suspects that visitors to the privacytools.io website may not be a 'normal' sample of the population

Which isn't supposed to be true.

Quoting software criteria:

  • Open Source
  • Cross-platform
  • Easy to use
  • Privacy respecting

We're trying to focus on the 'normal' sample of the population. (we're trying to focus on the entire population, per se, since we, well, recommend software and explain privacy)
I guess I don't fall into the 'normal' sample, but still can't relate to the Glenn's quote as much as to @cryptoseb's.

I agree. It's time for a change.

What do you think about explaining the fact that people act differently and enjoy less freedom while they are being recorded and monitored?

Like give an example: Did someone ever video tape you without asking you while you were talking? How did it feel? Did it change the whole nature of conversation? Were you uncomfortable? Now imagine everything you do online is being recorded by private and state organizations.

I'm bad at this but I hope you get the idea.

@privacytoolsIO I agree. We just need something that people can relate to.

No one shall be subjected to arbitrary interference with his privacy, family, home or correspondence, nor to attacks upon his honour and reputation. Everyone has the right to the protection of the law against such interference or attacks.

This could be quoted somewhere, but it doesn't explain what privacy is - which is the focus, as most people don't understand it and go with the "I have nothing to hide" argument.

Privacy is the right to keep my personal info and my own data private.

MS Windows 10 EULA states that

Your privacy is important to us.

Microsoft collects, uses and discloses personal information as described here. This allows One Drive data, Cortana searches and MS browser history to be sold to third parties for cash.

I value my privacy and I do not want my info to be sold by microsoft corporation.
