The template doesn't require storage to be present out of the box anymore. This was nice for people getting started with storage built in out of the box but it is only local-hostpath which isn't ideal and people more than times not require more features with like what rook-ceph or longhorn provide. I do not support openebs in other configurations (mayastor or whatever) nor ever plan to so to help reduce the amount of support around this it is removed. Another downside to openebs with local-hostpath is that there is no CSI snapshotting so there is no volsync support.
