this is called when the connection terminates, as opposed to when/if the connection is asked to stop by the grpc server.
3.9 stopped supporting configuration via env vars
github actions shows no output for 6 hours if this happens
don't rely on objgraph. when the test is not run in isolation, there may be other ServerConnectionManager objects in memory.

Simple solution: close the socket as soon as the connection manager exits.
