Slate still works great for me, even on Big Sur. It is absolutely amazing that @jigish wrote such a great window manager that it still works and is the best option I know of eight years after the last commit. I will keep using Slate as long as it still works, but I think I will eventually have to migrate to something else if Slate is no longer maintained. If that is the case, what would be the recommended replacement?
I think Slate is better than the options below so hopefully someone can recommend something new...
❌ Rectangle
❌ Amethyst
❌ Yabai
There are plenty of other window managers in the awesome-mac lists:

I am also wondering this. I love Slate, but I've had a couple of minor issues with Big Sur;

  • Sometimes find Slate hasn't started on boot
  • Connecting/Disconnecting external monitor doesn't always correctly arrange my windows (although a test just now did)
I've not looked at alternatives. Before Slate I was using BetterTouchTool for Window-snapping, but prefer the customizable config file approach of Slate and the auto-arrangement when changing displays.

Slate was not working for me in Big Sur, any tips? Could it be a problem with hot keys or access?

I think we should switch to Hammerspoon.
The biggest obstacle is translating slate features and config file settings into lua code,
but I found an example of an init.lua file that replicates the chain feature from slate:

Slate is working for me on Big Sur.

If Slate is not working for you on Big Sur, I recommend trying this:

  • System Preferences/Security & Privacy/Privacy
  • Accessibility
  • Unlock
  • Uncheck Slate
  • Recheck Slate
  • Relaunch Slate

This worked for me.

For me, @infews tip worked with a twist:

  • Remove slate from Accessibility
  • Add it back
  • Relaunch slate
