Testing example app on XPC: No module named 'canvas_sdk.effects.launch_modal'

I am attempting to create an app for the XPC canvas instance and when I:

1. canvas init myapp
2. Update the resulting my_application.py with a url
3. Run canvas install myapp

I get an error: Unable to load plugin "myapp": 'protocols'

I then add protocols: [] under components to my CANVAS_MANIFEST.json and when I reinstall I get the following:

Unable to load plugin "myapp": No module named 'canvas_sdk.effects.launch_modal'

Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?

I am on the latest canvas version (0.15.0) but I was getting it with earlier versions as well.

Hey @weishuhn — that instance is on a manually-deployed development branch, and was out of date. Sorry! We just initiated a new deploy, it should be updated in about 10 minutes. I'll confirm here and then you can try again and should succeed,

Not sure if you want me to create a new discussion but I have it installing but I can't get the in-app modal to open up. It works if I make the target to be NEW_WINDOW but not if it is DEFAULT_MODAL or RIGHT_CHART_PANE.

In the logs I have the following:

1. applications.qa_application:QAApplication.compute() completed (0 ms)
2. Responded to Event APPLICATION__ON_OPEN (1 ms)

But there is no effect on the screen. I've tried in both Firefox and Chrome.

@weishuhn For security reasons, you need to whitelist your origins. Please refer to our guide for details.

Version 0.15.0 has not been released to XPC yet, so please use 0.14.0 instead.

It might be helpful for future users to have the example origins in the guide ( currently "origins": ["https://my-application.com"]) match the url in the LaunchModalEffect code to make it more obvious (url="http://localhost:8000"). Or even just have it default to something know like https://google.com when doing an canvas init application so the example works out of the box.

0.15.0 will introduce some changes to applications and improved documentation. we'll let you know once it's released in XPC
