Our version of Ubuntu does not provide an Xdebug/PHP7 combination that works out of the box, so we need to build our own from source.
Existing installations will have an xdebug.so that appears at the top of this find list in another directory.

The version of Xdebug 2.4.0 that is available for our Ubuntu installation is not compatible with PHP 7.0. We instead retrieve the source package and go through the manual installation steps.
