Fixed Issues

$ #15896
PROPOSAL: #15896 (comment)

Tests

Same as QA Steps

  • Verify that no errors appear in the JS console

Offline tests

Same as QA Steps

QA Steps

Android/iOS/mWeb

  1. Open any chat
  2. Send an image, a protected pdf, and another image
  3. Open the protected PDF
  4. Verify the arrows don't cover the text
  5. Verify the arrows are hidden after 3 seconds
  6. Press the attachment to show the arrows
  7. Hold down the arrows
  8. Verify the arrows don't hide even after 3 seconds (not possible in mWeb because holding down the arrow will select a text)
  9. Keep pressing the arrows (next/prev)
  10. Verify the arrows don't hide even after 3 seconds
  11. Stop and wait for 3 seconds
  12. Verify the arrows now are hidden
  • Verify that no errors appear in the JS console

PR Author Checklist

  • I linked the correct issue in the ### Fixed Issues section above
  • I wrote clear testing steps that cover the changes made in this PR
    • I added steps for local testing in the Tests section
    • I added steps for the expected offline behavior in the Offline steps section
    • I added steps for Staging and/or Production testing in the QA steps section
    • I added steps to cover failure scenarios (i.e. verify an input displays the correct error message if the entered data is not correct)
    • I turned off my network connection and tested it while offline to ensure it matches the expected behavior (i.e. verify the default avatar icon is displayed if app is offline)
    • I tested this PR with a High Traffic account against the staging or production API to ensure there are no regressions (e.g. long loading states that impact usability).
  • I included screenshots or videos for tests on all platforms
  • I ran the tests on all platforms & verified they passed on:
    • Android / native
    • Android / Chrome
    • iOS / native
    • iOS / Safari
    • MacOS / Chrome / Safari
    • MacOS / Desktop
  • I verified there are no console errors (if there's a console error not related to the PR, report it or open an issue for it to be fixed)
  • I followed proper code patterns (see Reviewing the code)
    • I verified that any callback methods that were added or modified are named for what the method does and never what callback they handle (i.e. toggleReport and not onIconClick)
    • I verified that comments were added to code that is not self explanatory
    • I verified that any new or modified comments were clear, correct English, and explained "why" the code was doing something instead of only explaining "what" the code was doing.
    • I verified any copy / text shown in the product is localized by adding it to src/languages/* files and using the translation method
      • If any non-english text was added/modified, I verified the translation was requested/reviewed in #expensify-open-source and it was approved by an internal Expensify engineer. Link to Slack message:
    • I verified all numbers, amounts, dates and phone numbers shown in the product are using the localization methods
    • I verified any copy / text that was added to the app is correct English and approved by marketing by adding the Waiting for Copy label for a copy review on the original GH to get the correct copy.
    • I verified proper file naming conventions were followed for any new files or renamed files. All non-platform specific files are named after what they export and are not named "index.js". All platform-specific files are named for the platform the code supports as outlined in the README.
    • I verified the JSDocs style guidelines (in STYLE.md) were followed
  • If a new code pattern is added I verified it was agreed to be used by multiple Expensify engineers
  • I followed the guidelines as stated in the Review Guidelines
  • I tested other components that can be impacted by my changes (i.e. if the PR modifies a shared library or component like Avatar, I verified the components using Avatar are working as expected)
  • I verified all code is DRY (the PR doesn't include any logic written more than once, with the exception of tests)
  • I verified any variables that can be defined as constants (ie. in CONST.js or at the top of the file that uses the constant) are defined as such
  • I verified that if a function's arguments changed that all usages have also been updated correctly
  • If a new component is created I verified that:
    • A similar component doesn't exist in the codebase
    • All props are defined accurately and each prop has a /** comment above it */
    • The file is named correctly
    • The component has a clear name that is non-ambiguous and the purpose of the component can be inferred from the name alone
    • The only data being stored in the state is data necessary for rendering and nothing else
    • For Class Components, any internal methods passed to components event handlers are bound to this properly so there are no scoping issues (i.e. for onClick={this.submit} the method this.submit should be bound to this in the constructor)
    • Any internal methods bound to this are necessary to be bound (i.e. avoid this.submit = this.submit.bind(this); if this.submit is never passed to a component event handler like onClick)
    • All JSX used for rendering exists in the render method
    • The component has the minimum amount of code necessary for its purpose, and it is broken down into smaller components in order to separate concerns and functions
  • If any new file was added I verified that:
    • The file has a description of what it does and/or why is needed at the top of the file if the code is not self explanatory
  • If a new CSS style is added I verified that:
    • A similar style doesn't already exist
    • The style can't be created with an existing StyleUtils function (i.e. StyleUtils.getBackgroundAndBorderStyle(themeColors.componentBG))
  • If the PR modifies code that runs when editing or sending messages, I tested and verified there is no unexpected behavior for all supported markdown - URLs, single line code, code blocks, quotes, headings, bold, strikethrough, and italic.
  • If the PR modifies a generic component, I tested and verified that those changes do not break usages of that component in the rest of the App (i.e. if a shared library or component like Avatar is modified, I verified that Avatar is working as expected in all cases)
  • If the PR modifies a component related to any of the existing Storybook stories, I tested and verified all stories for that component are still working as expected.
  • If a new page is added, I verified it's using the ScrollView component to make it scrollable when more elements are added to the page.
  • If the main branch was merged into this PR after a review, I tested again and verified the outcome was still expected according to the Test steps.
  • I have checked off every checkbox in the PR author checklist, including those that don't apply to this PR.

PR is ready @parasharrajat.

Because automatically hide arrows is only available on mobile, I don't know what test steps to write that QA can verify the resized arrow for both Desktop/Web. I want to write "verify the arrows size are smaller then the current arrows", but it sounds confusing, so I just write a test step for mobile.

Here is how it looks on resized desktop when the attachment is hovered.

Test shrinking the PDF password form(We will observe if that looks good).

What is your take on this?

I personally prefer 40, but you can see the arrow is misaligned. To solve it, we can apply this style:

alignItems: 'center',
paddingHorizontal: 0,
paddingTop: 0,
paddingBottom: 0,

We want to clear the padding that comes from small button style, but we can't just set padding: 0 because it does not work (ref).

What is your take on this?

On desktop/web, we need to resize it very small which I think real user won't use the app with the small window.
For Android Chrome (which the only platform that still resize the modal), I don't think it would disturb the user as the arrows will be automatically hidden now.

Ok, let's do 40 then.

Auto-hide does not seem to provide the best UX.

  1. BUG: The button should not hide when the user is long pressing over hovering over the icons themselves.
  2. BUG: it feels weird when the user is navigating between images via arrow keys and they auto-hide after an image switch.
  3. Suggestion: let's keep the same margin from edges on Web| desktop displays.

I think it's already pretty clear that we want to automatically hide the arrow when the component mounts. Adding a comment feels redundant to me.

BUG: The button should not hide when the user is long pressing over hovering over the icons themselves.

Solved when the user long press. I don't get the hovering part. The auto hide arrow is only for mobile screen, so we can't hover over it, except when we use emulator.

BUG: it feels weird when the user is navigating between images via arrow keys and they auto-hide after an image switch.

Solved.

Suggestion: let's keep the same margin from edges on Web| desktop displays.

Do you mean a different style for web? I also thinks the arrow is really near the edge in web/desktop.
EDIT: done

BUG: mWEB: It takes two clicks to see the arrow buttons after autoHide.

Steps:

  1. open the attachment viewer in any chat which has more than 3 attachments.
  2. Press the arrow left once to see the old attachment.
  3. Move your cursor ti the empty area and wait for the arrows to autohide.
  4. Now click to see the arrow.

BUG: mweb: Even if arrows are hidden clicking on their position triggers image navigation.

Steps:

  1. open the attachment viewer in any chat which has more than 3 attachments.
  2. Press the arrow left once to see the old attachment.
  3. Wait for arrows to hide.
  4. Now click on the same location to see the arrow.
  5. Notice the image is also changed.

BUG: mweb: Even if arrows are hidden clicking on their position triggers image navigation.

I found that onMouseEnter event is called even on touch screen, but not always. When we press the hidden button, it will trigger the onMouseEnter and show the arrow and at the same time will trigger the onPress. This bug only happen on Android Chrome. So, I disable the enter and leave event on touch screen device.

BUG: mWEB: It takes two clicks to see the arrow buttons after autoHide.

I can't reproduce this issue. Can you test again? Maybe it will be resolved after the new changes.

EDIT:
I'm thinking that we shouldn't store the result of DeviceCapabilities.canUseTouchScreen() into canUseTouchScreen
this.canUseTouchScreen = DeviceCapabilities.canUseTouchScreen();
because it won't update dynamically when the browser window changes. I'm planning to do it like this:

I didn't understand this part. Why are we checking the _.isUndefined(shouldShowArrow) when this is a required param?

In renderCell, there is a Pressable which will toggle the value based on the previous value.

For context, previously, the onPress logic is
toggleArrowsVisibility(!this.state.shouldShowArrow)
then by this PR #16973, the logic changes to
this.setState(current => ({shouldShowArrow: !current.shouldShowArrow}))

We call the auto hide arrow inside toggleArrowsVisibility. Because we set the state manually (this.setState(current => ({shouldShowArrow: !current.shouldShowArrow}))), the arrow never auto hide and I think we will be repeating the logic to show/hide the arrow inside the setState callback

Sorry, I don't quite understand your comment.

We call autoHide/cancelAutoHide inside the setState callback of toggleArrowVisibility. If we manually set the state of shouldShowArrow (this.setState(current => ({shouldShowArrow: !current.shouldShowArrow}))), we should repeat the same callback logic, which is to call autoHide/cancelAutoHide. To prevent repeating the same code, this changes is made.

So, toggleArrowVisiblity now can accept empty parameter to literally toggle it.

I am not able to imagine the difference between both but IMO his.setState(current => ({shouldShowArrow: !current.shouldShowArrow})) is better for calls where the user can take the action multiple times and we want to remember all the actions and update their states in sequence.

If we just pass this.setState({something: static value}) it will be called with the old state when the user clicks multiple times very quickly. These state updates will be batched.

Yes, that's why if we pass nothing to toggleArrowVisibility, we set the value based on the previous state.
