Request for field testing of new 8.1 (and 8.0) staging releases

Issue #35 identified problems resulting from the interpretation of the c++ language standard by new versions of g++. The changes required to address those issues have been made, successfully unit tested, and integrated into two new branches - staging-8.1.1 (pull request #39) and staging-8.0.1 (pull request #38). This issue requests whatever additional field testing we deem necessary to sign off on these changes.
