There are perhaps a few things we could try to speed up somewhat the creation of lagged data:

try shifting multiple columns at once?
do few things (e.g. calling DF.rename()) in place with pandas
We should probably stick to pandas, but there are drop-in replacements which could help, e.g.: https://github.com/modin-project/modin
