xlwings has grown into a suite of projects:

  • xlwings At the core is the open-source xlwings package that lets you program Excel on Windows and macOS via a local Python installation. xlwings uses a BSD 3-Clause License, which is a business-friendly open-source license.
  • xlwings Lite is an add-in that can be installed via Excel's add-in store and allows you to use xlwings without the need of a local Python installation. It's free to use for both personal and business purposes when installed via Excel's add-in store. The idea is to provide the Python in Excel solution that we all wanted.   • xlwings Server lets you create modern Excel add-ins with Python running on a server or a serverless function. It's the ideal solution for enterprises as it integrates into a professional CI/CD workflow, is self-hosted, and supports advanced features such as SSO authentication via Entra ID, streaming functions, and object handles. It's free for non-commercial use but requires an xlwings PRO license for use with a business.
