Stop GPU Applications feature

I have a 2020 model and find the Stop GPU Applications feature of ghelper to be really helpful since this laptop has a bug where the dGPU will continue to run after waking from sleep. Any insight on what "Stop GPU Applications" does? I would like to setup a scheduled task to run the same commands or call this function after waking from sleep if possible. Thanks again.

Stop GPU apps takes a list of processes that use GPU from Nvidia driver and stops them :) That's it.

Windows itself however can keep GPU active. Since your device does not support complete GPU toggle, it's up to windows here

Thanks @seerge . So does this function do anything at all with my specific device or are you saying that Windows ultimately has control over this? If it does still work for my device, is there a simple way to run the query from the driver and stop it? Maybe something in ghelper that will auto run it on wakeup? 🤞 😄 Thanks so much for maintaining this tool btw. It's great.

@knewknow it literally stops apps :) so this can help windows to free up dGPU and put it to sleep.

You can also adjust windows power plan and set dynamic graphics to maximize power saving next to this

Then windows will mainly try to use iGPU as much as it can on battery for example

Yup, I already have this setting selected. But the 2020 model of the G14 has this weird bug where the dgpu is still in use after sleep. Doesn't affect hibernation though as far as I remember. I only started using this laptop again on battery and forgot how annoying this bug is. I started to use this tool again to help with it... https://github.com/aredden/RestartGPU

I'm only back on this after running Win11 (power is awful) on this laptop for years and only recently going back to Win10 and am reminded of how weird the power issues are on the 2020 model specifically. The tool I mentioned above (RestartGPU) doesn't always work, and often the machine will just draw power at around 30w consistently without anything running. The only fix is to restart it. Anyway... I don't want to bother you anymore with this one since it's a pretty niche issue and only really plagues the really old model. Thanks again for GHelper. It's really great.

@knewknow that tool just disables and re-enables GPU in device manager, it's a cumbersome way to force processes off dGPU to be honest

Yes agreed. It's definitely not ideal. And after using it just this morning after noticing the same 30w drain issue, it didn't fix it, so something else is going on (not related to the dgpu, unless the tool didn't work).

I remember when this laptop was new, there were tons of reddit threads discussing this weird power draw phenomenon. It's too bad that it still exists.

This was a good thread that explained that hibernate was the fix and that the problem is around a USB-C port on wakeup. This is all only starting to come back to me now (and I'm going down the same rabbit hole) after coming back to Win10. Win11 is absolutely awful for battery life on this machine.
