I just found this and struggled with the npm version. I ended up forking this and removing the persist functionality entirely, as it was giving me strange bugs, and my app now installs from my fork instead of from the true npm version. This solved all problems for me. I won't submit a PR since this simply removes (in my experience, broken) functionality.
