would enable some user configuration (git --global user.{email,name}) to be committed and saves some typing during development work, because /home/medianet is not a very interesting place to be...

Downside: there is a slightly increased risk of production keys leaking to git if some fixes are applied to a production machine in the field and then committed from there (which I sometimes like to do). Those keys would have to be git added explicitly, but it's not impossible...
Maybe some suitable .gitignore statement could prevent this.
