When remoting into a host Sunshine PC with the host not playing any audio, the Moonlight client works as expected by playing audio only in the client and not on the host.
However, after I minimise the remote session (NOT Quit Session) or even minimise the app itself the client sends a disconnect event which is captured in Sunshine's log. However the user hasn't even instructed to Quit the remote session. Due to this behaviour the host PC is instructed to revert to the default audio output device (Realtek(R) Audio) instead of forcing it to be on the Virtual Sink audio output device (Steam Streaming Speakers).
When I remote back in, it changes the audio output device back to Virtual Sink but during this entire process the game's audio is no longer audible unless I force restart the game from Steam Big Picture.
Steps to reproduce
Verify that "Play audio on PC" is unticked from Moonlight
Remote into Sunshine PC from Moonlight
Open Sound from Control Panel
Verify that the Virtual Sink is the default device
In Moonlight client do the back button hand gesture, or the button.
Verify that in Moonlight client there is a white play sign on top of whatever app you've launched for testing (Or just hold on the app and verify that Quit Session is present)
Check the host PC and the default device is switched back to Audio Sink
Now remote back again into the same app and as expected it reverts back to Virtual Sink
Affected games
Touhou Luna Nights, but ideally any other game which isn't happy with switching audio devices while the game is running.

Why is Moonlight sending Client disconnects when the user hasn't instructed to Quit the Session? shouldn't it just minimise the remote session without sending those disconnect events?
This should be a Sunshine issue. Moonlight android can't keep the stream active while being put to background, even if it can, you'll still wasting bandwidth for a stream that you're not viewing.
The only way to prevent stream being destroyed when returning to Home Screen is enable Picture in Picture mode in moonlight settings, but that still can't prevent it from being disconnected while switching apps. You have to go to Home Screen first then open other apps.

Thanks for the quick reply, Yes I had tried the Picture in Picture mode but like you've mentioned, if I switch over apps the stream is cut. I had opened up an issue similar to this in Sunshine but just wanted to know where exactly the problem lies. Closing this thread.
Describe the bug
When remoting into a host Sunshine PC with the host not playing any audio, the Moonlight client works as expected by playing audio only in the client and not on the host.
However, after I minimise the remote session (NOT Quit Session) or even minimise the app itself the client sends a disconnect event which is captured in Sunshine's log. However the user hasn't even instructed to Quit the remote session. Due to this behaviour the host PC is instructed to revert to the default audio output device (Realtek(R) Audio) instead of forcing it to be on the Virtual Sink audio output device (Steam Streaming Speakers).
When I remote back in, it changes the audio output device back to Virtual Sink but during this entire process the game's audio is no longer audible unless I force restart the game from Steam Big Picture.
