Suggested new feature or improvement

A one-click option to apply recommended Windows settings designed to improve the development experience on Windows. These settings could apply to the Start menu, taskbar, window snapping options, etc. Below is the list of settings we're considering for V1. We'd love to hear any settings you'd like to see here.

This is related to #1983

Scenario

Windows isn't necessarily optimized for development right out of the box. To make it easier to get into a dev-ready state, we could provide a recommended set of settings to help developers feel more at home on Windows.

Settings list

General

File Explorer

  • Show file extensions
  • Show hidden and system items
  • Show files after extraction is complete
  • Show the details pane for files
  • Show empty drives
  • Show option to run as different user in Start
  • Show Recycle Bin in the navigation pane
  • Use checkboxes to select items

Command line

  • Install PowerShell 7+
  • Set PowerShell 7+ to default shell in Terminal if not already modified

I would like applications to be installed in something else but C: by default. I would like node, npm, NuGet to use a different drive for caching by default. I want my TEMP files and AppData stuff in a drive close to the root. I like short folder names without spaces.

Summary:

  • setup an alternative drive / folder for my VS, Node, etc.
  • setup an alternative drive for my cache and temp files
  • keep C: "clean" for the OS
  • stop syncing "dev" stuff to OneDrive
  • I want my dev SQL Server installation to be a folder on disk.

Or: I want global control where stuff is placed.

Big +1 for an Enable Win32 long paths setting.
