Description of problem

Running a simple tar cf /tmp/usr.tar /usr from a container with 9pfs emits tons of error messages like:

tar: /usr/include/python3.9/pyconfig-64.h: File shrank by 43554 bytes; padding with zeros
tar: /usr/libexec/dirmngr_ldap: File shrank by 45896 bytes; padding with zeros
tar: /usr/libexec/gpg-preset-passphrase: File shrank by 41584 bytes; padding with zeros
tar: /usr/libexec/sudo/group_file.so: File shrank by 7664 bytes; padding with zeros
tar: /usr/libexec/sudo/sample_approval.so: File shrank by 11272 bytes; padding with zeros
tar: /usr/libexec/sudo/sudoers.so: File shrank by 490848 bytes; padding with zeros
tar: /usr/libexec/sudo/system_group.so: File shrank by 11232 bytes; padding with zeros
tar: /usr/libexec/sudo/sudo_noexec.so: File shrank by 10688 bytes; padding with zeros
tar: /usr/libexec/sudo/libsudo_util.so.0.0.0: File shrank by 107424 bytes; padding with zeros
tar: /usr/libexec/sudo/sesh: File shrank by 19672 bytes; padding with zeros

Expected result

No error messages (none shown with virtiofs)

Actual result

Messages above. That seems to indicate that 9pfs reports the wrong file size?

Further information

Discovered while gathering data to compare 9pfs with virtiofs.

I had another container running with virtiofsd at the same time, i.e. I had simply changed the configuration file between runs.

Ran the container with podman run -it --runtime kata fedora bash.

@c3d - this sounds rather like the infamous 9p unlink/truncate bug:

See the tmpfs (or ramfs) workaround here:
