Google Summer of Code 2025?

I am delighted to see that build123d is now a very usable CodeCAD python library, and is quickly gaining the momentum. It clearly shows that code-based CAD system is the only viable way forward for collaborating in large scale.

However, there are important features on the TODO list that needs to be done before build123d becomes competitive.

Is it time for us to become one of the organizations for the Google Summer of Code 2025, and let the contributors pick the tasks from the pre release 1.0.0 list, and perhaps also the post release 1.0.0 list?

Please do so! I understand that there is a certain timeframe for us to apply to Google as sponsoring organization for the GSoC 2025, so we need to act quickly.

Also, would it pay to reach out to the FreeCAD developers to rope them in?

You may want to raise this on discord. There may well be some senior build123d developers (such as @jdegenstein and @openvmp ) who are willing to mentor students.

I note that @openvmp is also the founder of PartCAD, so he may be in a position to mentor engineering students, who have experience in both mechanical engineering and software development to look at the tasks at both build123d and PartCAD! This will also help better coordination between developments of build123d and PartCAD.

@openvmp it appears that vscode is now the most popular IDE for codecad systems, and codecad leads itself to AI assisted CAD design.

It aldo appears that partcad, which supports build123d, is the lead addon at vscode

Therefore i strongly believe that Microsoft will be super interested in both partcad and build123d, as this may enable microsoft to enter the area of AI driven CAD.

Have you thought of getting funding and support from microsft? You may land at a job at Microsoft..... who knows?

I've spoken with Jern and he can't commit to being a mentor either.

I have no interest in build123d being taken over by Microsoft.
