@ArturFormella If you actually think that punishing a whole population for what their leaders have done will bring peace, then I suggest you try reading some history: for example what an amazing success the Treaty of Versailles was. |

TL;DR: I don’t think that services like the GitHub may/should be used as weapon against our country... at least at this point And how would it help? |

Have you ever heard about "proxy" or "vpn"? |

A blanket restriction sounds like a bad idea. Not all citizens of a country are aligned with the actions of their government. |

It's a very bad idea, and GitHub are smarter than that (not that I speak for them). Geo-blocking a whole country makes it harder for those young Russians that are already communicating with the rest of the world on a regular basis, and most likely to have a more globalist view and not being Putin supporters. It would also hurt the community, and the trust of the repository maintainers (who might migrate from GitHub). It makes no sense to lock out contributors from your repository. How would that help Ukraine? To the degree that the economic sanctions of blocking access to consume free software would theoretically make sense, it just wouldn't work. The business-critical software uses software repositories such as npm. And those have mirrors, so they can't even geo-restrict. And of course no one can shut down VPNs. |

I don't think the actions of the Russian government should effect normal people many of which oppose the Russian government |

also reminder that this isn't something like an economic sanction, where it affects majority of the civilians to a point where they are forced to revolt against their leaders to reconsider their actions, this is a fairly niche platform, and definitely not something your average civilian would be using. Cutting off Russians from github would achieve absolutely nothing other than causing more harm to the free software community. |

Given github's relationship with ICE and their inaction regarding the various warcrimes committed by the US of A, Canada, and friends in middle east and Afghanistan I doubt that they will do anything about it, especially when considering how much milder this conflict is. |

Well, what should GitHub (Microsoft that is) do during the next war of aggression by the United States in violation of international law? They'd have to move out of the US first... |

Github shouldn't restrict Russian users. Informing is better than restricting. I think instead it would be much better if Github put up a message of support for Ukraine and inform users about the ongoing situation. This way any Russian users who have only watched state media until now (which claims things like zero Russian casualties, and it only being a limited Donbas operation) will hopefully have a better understanding of the truth. |

It's just a one more sanction among the other ones (Netflix, GooglePay, ApplePay, Visa, MasterCard, Pornhub, ...{long list}). Honestly, I don't really think that this is going to happen. But I believe that isolating Russia territory (not people, as you always can change the county of occupation) from Maven, Npm, DockerHub, Atlassian services and number of other engineering tools is going to change your mind and make you more proactive. |

Instead of wasting time here, read this: https://www.cnn.com/2022/02/24/us/iyw-how-to-help-ukraine/index.html and try to REALLY help. |

I'm not going to take part in a useless Internet flame over the huge tragedy of two nations with a significant percentage of people who have relatives on both sides. Honestly, compared to that vast tragedy, to its consequenses to common people and to the sanctions, to the internal quarrel we, russians, are having between wise citizens and brainwashed ones... that proposition of banning Github is sad but looks really small and unimportant. I just want to ask those who think it's a good idea: have you ever in your life stood up against a prepared police troop? Have you opposed those in a riot once in your life somewhere where any court would send you to prison for 2-3 years if there's a need? I know a few people who did and... that wasn't enough still. |

Unless directly requested by the US government, tt would be highly non-professional to ban GitHub accounts based on nationality of their owners. This is basically the same as if baker will sale its bread to the good people and reject to sale its bread to the bad people. The baker's job is to make bread, not to judge people. The person who can't distinguish its own job from other's job cannot be considered as professional worker. |

IT has always been an industry that brought together very different people. If it becomes an instrument of suppression, the world will become even closer to self-destruction. Those who don't want to read a lot can read the last three paragraphs. Russia and Ukraine were previously a single state. When Ukraine adopted the Declaration of Independence in 1990, there was the following: But since 1994, Ukraine has been cooperating with NATO. Here is the confirmation: https://www.nato.int/cps/ru/natohq/topics_37750.htm?selectedLocale=en . In 1999, the United States, with the support of NATO, began bombing Serbia. They also called it a military operation. Only for some reason carpet bombing was used in the military operation. And these were bombings not only on military targets. Forget about the bombing of Bosnia in 1995, when the US and NATO also intervened militarily. These two events contradict the act on mutual relations between Russia and NATO - https://www.nato.int/cps/ru/natohq/official_texts_25468.htm?selectedLocale=en In turn, since 1994, members of the Ukrainian nationalist group UNA-UNSO have been involved in the Chechen conflict on the side of the so-called separatists. Those who were defended by the European press. And those who seized hospitals, schools and staged terrorist attacks not only on the territory of Russia. In 2006, the population of Crimea protested against NATO exercises in the city of Feodosia. In 2008, only Ukraine supported Georgia in the conflict and restricted the movement of the Russian Black Sea Fleet. The EU investigation further confirmed that Russia did not start that conflict. Then the Ukrainian nationalists manifest themselves on the Maidan in 2014 and the conflict in the Donbas. The very nationalists whose ideals were condemned in Nuremberg. Since 2014, Russia has been hosting refugees from Ukraine, providing them with assistance and support. Throughout the period since the beginning of Ukraine's cooperation with NATO and the continuation of NATO's expansion to the east, the Russian government has repeatedly expressed its concerns. It were ignored by the world community. For the entire period before the collapse of the USSR and after it, the United States, using Europe for its own purposes, and Russia are in a state of "cold war". During this time, Russia has experienced the collapse of the country, two military conflicts on its territory, several financial crises, and restored the army and navy. The United States and NATO have increased NATO territory and military spending, intervened in several local conflicts and periodically accuse Russia of pursuing a policy that has ceased to be beneficial for NATO since 2000. In February of this year, Russia begins a military operation that everyone calls a war. The news propaganda of both sides of the conflict is being promoted by 100%. Only now people who didn't even know where Ukraine was until that moment are starting to speak on the side of Ukraine. People take the position of judges and pacifists, ignoring the facts of nationalism and oppression of Russians and assistance to Donbass refugees from Russia. The rhetoric of President Zelensky is ignored, who first seeks negotiations and talks about the neutral status of the country, and then distributes weapons to the population, calls for beating the enemy and submits an application to the EU. And thanks to the news of their countries, people see only one side of the conflict, ignoring the other. Only some parties in Germany and Serbia understand Russia's motives and find the strength to express an opinion that differs from others. Friends, I ask you all, please try to hear the other side. If Russia were the way it is shown in other countries, the world would have been plunged into darkness long ago and I would not be calling on my colleagues from other countries to hear me now. If Russia wanted to destroy the fraternal people, there would already be a Russian flag in Kiev. I want to live in a world where there is no war, I want to write high-quality code and make other people's lives better, and not spend days flipping through the tape waiting for the conflict to be resolved. But for this, my country and I need to be heard. And I will not claim that we are right in everything we do. We're wrong, and maybe we're wrong now, too. But history and the international court of Justice will be able to condemn us. But I am sure that even without a trial, Russia will help Ukraine recover from the conflict, as it is helping refugees now. But is this a reason to hate us and judge us without investigation now? Is this a reason to expel Russian engineers from the global IT community, despite what they have done? |

If you think that blocking IT support sites like GitHub will help stop what the Russian government has started, then I pity you. You will only harm IT specialists, many of whom work remotely for foreign companies. Not only Russia, but also everyone else will suffer from this, since there are many specialists working for foreign companies in the country |

Block from Atlassian resources like Jira, Mira. BUT most developers has nothing to do with crime. Why we cannot rather try to make them our allies? |

Dear GitHub ( @github-staff , @ArturFormella ), don't you think that turning off the inhabitants of the country from access to the open-source software is "a little" contrary to the idea of open-source software? P.S. |

It's a very very strage suggestion. Sorry, but russian github users it's not a good target audience, It will be a blindfold strike. All who supports Putin regime aren't on github, event opposite, all who protest on a streets right now in Russia are a github users. It's people with democratic values mostly. |
