Instead of solely using the scroll wheel to zoom, it would be cool if you could zoom by holding the right mouse button and drag to zoom in and out. Drag up and you zoom out (as if you were pushing the scene away from you) and drag down and it zooms in (as if you were pulling the scene toward you).
Then if you felt really into it, right and left could have the same function as left-click + drag. That way, holding the left mouse button moves you in the camera's yz plane and holding the right mouse button moves you in the camera's xy plane.
