Updates:

• roadmap update for Q4/2021 - https://github.com/orgs/esp-rs/projects/1
• switched to Rust stable from nightly (still some platforms seems to depend on nightly, probably due to build)
• added CI workflows for testing of Rust build of espressif/rust-esp32-example and ivmarkov/rust-esp32-std-hello with Xtensa and RISC-V - https://github.com/esp-rs/rust-build/tree/main/.github/workflows
• supported runners: GitHub Ubuntu, Windows, macOS x86_64; Custom runners Windows, macOS M1
• improved Bash and PowerShell installer script (idf-env not updated yet)
• discovered issues on Windows
  • dependency on Python
  • Ccache problem on libsodium long paths (IDF_CCACHE_ENABLED has no effect)
• qemu for for esp32 - useful for testing

  • limitation: esp32s2 and esp32c3 are not supported by qemu

• Experimental wrappers for the ESP-IDF HTTP client here.

  • Main use case: have some HTTPS (TLS) story, until we figure out how to bridge ESP-IDF's mbedTLS with the Rust TLS ecosystem
  • Note: requires --features experimental build flag
  • Note: the generic, ESP-IDF-agnostic "HTTP client" traits in embedded-svc need Rust GATs. (Couldn't figure out the lifetimes without GATs.)
  • WIP: Similar set of GAT-based traits for the ESP-IDF HTTP server, which will supersede the current HTTPD wrappers in esp-idf-svc

• CMake-first builds (idf.py build) now supported

  • A CMake-first demo with the bells and whistles from the rust-esp32-std-hello demo here.

• (Update): The fix for IDFGH-5896 needs an extra fix...

probe-rs

• All flash related items/PR's for flashing esp32c3 merged into master
  • Installing cargo-flash using master probe-rs will allow you to flash an esp32c3 with --chip esp32c3
• Debugging
  • Core debugging seems to work being able to set and stop on breakpoints
  • Issues with the VScode extension not being able to decode stacktrace etc: RISCV issues probe-rs/vscode#11

• Book updates, including an overview of std approach and no_std
• Starting to port @igrr atomic emu trap to Rust

Bare Metal

• The first ESP32 SVD has been released
  • Still very much incomplete, but received a lot of good feedback
  • Working through known issues, will publish updated SVD when done
• Updated SVDs for ESP32-C3 and ESP32-S2 have been released
  • Fixes, new SVD generator features, etc.
• Question: Am I allowed access to the modem CSV files (WiFi, BT, etc.) or do we need to come up with another solution for including these peripherals?

• Further improvements to error messages/handling
• eFuse values can now be read, so more information about chips can be displayed
• Generated binaries can optionally be saved to disk (like elf2image)
• Draft PR open for direct boot support
