Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.

The ability to draw a wildcard atom directly from the top-level menu, either * or A, is standard in other sketchers and heavily used in any application involving querying

Describe the solution you'd like

Please consider enabling a wildcard button in the top-level menu, using * or A to designate wildcard atom. Ideally showing/hiding this button would be toggleable by the developer.

For example, please consider enabling the wildcard button under Iodine in the sketcher (the button would display either * or A):

Describe alternatives you've considered

Currently users must click the periodic table button, then click 'Extended', then click A under 'Atom Generics'.

Many average users cannot figure this out on their own, and are frustrated even if they can.

HI @graphite-diamond,

thank you for reaching out.
We are planning to make Extended table more easily accessible in one of the closest releases in the future. The solution you've described is one of the options we are considering.

Right now you can recommend to the users the following way of quick introduction of the any atom (A) to the canvas. It does not allow to quickly add generics to the canvas, but it helps to replace the atoms that are already on the canvas:

  1. Enable the Lasso tool
  2. Select the atoms on the canvas that should be replaced
  3. Type A (or Q, M, X) on the keyboard. The form Label Edit will appear. Confirm the change by clicking on the OK button:

The atoms on the canvas will be replaced with the items from the Extended table.

Hope it will ease at least some of the work for now.

Best regards,
Alena & Ketcher team.
