What happened?

Using the colon syntax (:grinning:), which is even suggested by the emoji picker, is not transformed into emoji unless you select it from the picker which then transforms it into the Unicode.

This kind of workflow is especially useful for typing small emoji like :+1: or copy pasting some markdown from GitHub.

Expected

When sending the message, the emoji would transform into the Unicode emoji.

I could see how the current behavior was also intentional to allow sending plaintext colon syntax. But my first impression was this was unexpected coming from other markdown apps like GitHub, GitLab. On Slack nowadays, it even automatically transforms in the composer no matter how you type/paste, etc which I don't prefer but just for the point of comparison.

Environment

Occurs everywhere (any OS, desktop or browser).
