We used to have nice color indication for Advanced Settings when they have been changed from the default in 2.x. This makes it easier for the end user to tell if settings have been changed from the default.

In 5.0+, all values have the same color regardless of whether they are changed or default values:

With the list of advanced settings growing to 50 and possibly more in the future, it can be helpful to bring back this feature (or a different way to organize default vs customized settings better in the future).

Agreed, it was convenient. @alt74 @cjcenizal Is it just an oversight that it's gone in 5.0?

I don't think I was involved in this change but based on the usefulness of this feature, I think it was just lost in the UI update to 5.0. I'll remove the discuss label from this and mark it as a bug.

Kibana 6.4 will include an overhaul of Advanced Settings (#17465) that will display all settings as form inputs. Default value will be displayed on the left, under the description:
