We run a client only ES node on our kibana server and point kibana to http://localhost:9200
in the kibana.yml config file.
Whenever I am pointing to the local, client-only node the kibana page never loads all of the weay, (just loads the gray bar at the top). This eventually terminates with a request timeout.
By changing kibana.yml to point to a data containing node, the interface seems to work just fine

Hmm, I've tested this multiple times against non-data nodes. There's really no reason this would ever happen with Kibana as elasticsearch would simply route the request to nodes with data. If this was a bug it would be an elasticsearch bug. What are you seeing in your browser console?
