In my team's use-case, we'd prefer if we could pass a placeholder value to the editor, which could act exactly like the placeholder text in the EuiTextarea. It would save us a bit of real estate and generally make our forms more user friendly. Is this something that sounds viable or desirable from your point of view?

It makes sense. For example, the GitHub MD editor has a placeholder:
