Hi guys!

Trying to find opensource Elixir projects to contribute to, I found this community and repo. This initiative and project resonates with my core values.

What is the best way to join, is that community still active, and what should I do as my first step?
The gitter community mentions frequently, but I was overwhelmed by articles and could not find the way to contribute.

Thanks in advance!

Hi @dmitrii-esin 👋
Answering here instead of on the closed issue #143 (comment) 📕
We have several beginner-level Elixir / Phoenix projects on GitHub to get people accustomed to our Tech Stack.
What sort of contribution do you have in mind? 🤔

And crucially, what level are your Elixir skills at right now? 🥷

My reading of your GitHub profile: https://github.com/dmitrii-esin is you are early in your Elixir journey ... 💭

Consider extending your Elixir learning/notes and adding a README.md so people know how far you got ...

I realise that your public repos might not reflect your true skill level. 🙈
We've worked with EPAM in the past and they aren't known for encouraging their team to build anything Open Source on GitHub ... 🙃

Reading your LinkedIn you appear to have extensive experience! ⭐

Are you planning to use Elixir for a work project soon or personal one? 💭

Gitter ...?

Sadly, had to stop using Gitter for internal coms because it was too buggy/laggy/unreliable: dwyl/hq#517 😞
We've been using a combination of GitHub Issues and Signal for fast questions/replies. 💬
But start with GitHub as it's where most info is and is async. 👌

Thank you for the detailed answer!

I'm unpleasantly surprised a little by this attitude.

I've expressed my interest, highlighted the fact that I was astonished by this project, but I did not expect the only negative feedback as a response to my answer. I was thinking that we're an open-source community and we do these contributions in order to develop each other, grow together, and make the environment better, isn't it?

Regarding the mentioned company it's a numerous open source initiatives, as far as I know, so I don't know where your information comes from.
(I'm not talking as a company representative, it's my personal GitHub account and my personal opinion)

That's true, I'm still in the very early stages of Elixir's journey. I have no production experience with the Elixir ecosystem, but I have a lot of theoretical and hands-on experience. Also, I'm very curious and interested in the Elixir ecosystem. You can find my info on what motivated me here: https://elixirforum.com/t/javascript-developer-with-7-years-of-experience-is-elixir-a-good-next-step-for-me/56225

Anyway, thank you once again for the interesting information, links, and other materials. I will use it for a good reason for self-development and will try to find another opportunity for a contribution. 👋

@dmitrii-esin you have misinterpreted my proactive research as "negative". 😞
I wish I had more time to explain to you the difference between constructive and negative feedback ... ⏳

When your personal trainer tells you to do more pull-ups, they aren't being negative. 🤦‍♂️
They're not "arm-shaming" you; they want you to get better. 💪

When you join a new martial arts gym and the Sensei asks "what belt did you wear at your previous dojo?" 🥋
It's not so they can put you down, it's just to know what level you are at so they can help you. 🔰
Not going to give you Black-belt tasks if you are a Green. 💭

Anyway, I think you're awesome! 😍
Best of luck in 2025! 🚀
