Here’s a bit of the story of “makefaq”. Back in early 2000, I needed to generate a Frequently-Asked Question (FAQ) back for a website I was working on. Given that I was doing a good bit of work with python at the time, I wrote up a little program called “makefaq” and then uploaded it to SourceForge. A number of people found it useful, sent ideas and patches and over time it evolved into the last version I put out, makefaq 2.5, in February 2004.
Fast forward five years… it’s January 2009 and I’ve done basically nothing with makefaq since early 2004. However, for a variety of reasons I want to learn about using git for source code control and interacting with github. Ergo… the revival of ‘makefaq’… at least as a way for me to learn about using git and github.
I’ll be honest and say that I don’t really know how much actual evolution I’ll do to makefaq… I’ve had a few feature requests over the years but overall most folks have just said it does what they want it to do. I may tinker with it a bit, though, but again… mostly in the spirit of using it to learn more about git/github. It was written way back in python 2.3, so I may play with it a bit to see if there are any updates that make sense.
You’re welcome to fork it and play with it. Like I said, it was written to scratch an itch (that is long since gone) and if it helps anyone else that’s a great thing.
