Number fields don't want to be blank

Expected behavior

When removing a number from a number field, it will remain blank and save blank (unless set as a required field).

Actual behavior

Creating a new document and saving it with a blank number fields works. When editing an existing document with a populated number field, it is impossible to leave the number field blank.

Steps to reproduce the problem

Add a number field to a document, create and save a document with the number field populated, try to remove the contents of the number field.
