In windows 8, I cannot copy or paste anything Brackets.CTRL-C and CTRL-V does absolutely nothing. Nothing installed other than the Themes For Brackets.

edit: CTRL-V instead of CTRL-P

I don't have Windows 8, but isn't the shortcut key for paste still ctrl-v?

Yes, my mistake, I meant CRTL-V, CTRL-V does nothing

What version of Brackets are you running?

I'm not seeing any problems with either of the Themes extensions on my computer, but we should probably rule it out on yours. Does the problem go away if you uninstall the Themes extension?

Does copy and paste work if you use the menu entry instead of the shortcut keys?

I am using sprint 35 experimental build 0.35.0-10897 (release 445deaaa9) and after uninstalling the theme extensions I still have the same problem. The copy and paste still doesn't work on the menu entry either. However, if I highlight something and press CTRL-V it deletes it, like if its pasting an empty string so I think its just the copy short cut that isn't working with my clipboard or something along those lines.

does it work in other editors? notepad, for example? i've seen cases where it would be a system problem with shortcuts and not particularly one of Brackets.

Yes, it works in Sublime Text and in pretty much every program other than Brackets and Light Table for some reason.

Interesting that it's broken in LightTable too. I think they use node-webkit, which is based on CEF3, so it could be a CEF issue on your machine. Could conceivably be a CM issue as well.

How would I go about debugging this problem with those?

@SpokenBanana This is a stretch, but any chance you're running an app called "Webroot Identity Shield"? This sounds suspiciously like bug #2531...

@SpokenBanana You can try some of the workarounds on WebRoot's support page here: https://community.webroot.com/t5/Webroot-SecureAnywhere-Antivirus/Cut-Copy-or-Paste-Problems-Character-Entry-Issues-Scripting/ta-p/18396#.UhKP9pLVBsk

They were supposed to have whitelisted Brackets a number of months ago though. If it's possible your WebRoot install is 5+ months old, you could try following my uninstall/reinstall instructions here to see if that fixes it.

Clarifying bug title (added "with WebRoot Identity Shield running")

@SpokenBanana If you do try the WebRoot uninstall/reinstall, let me know if it works? Otherwise we'll need to reach out to them again to get Brackets re-whitelisted.

Yes it worked, it turns out it was still "monitored". I've only had the WebRoot for a little over a month but the uninstall/reinstall thing worked for me, thank you so much!

@peterflynn, low priority - not sure if we still need touch base with WebRoot.

I found a solution to this bug/feature of webroot security.

  1. on the task bar, right click on webroot icon and click View Status
  2. click on advanced settings
  3. click on Shields tab
  4. uncheck Silently and automatically block untrusted access to user data

Next time you try to paste, you'll get a prompt whether you want to allow the action. Click always allow.
