Animation support for "Related Pages" preview

We need to be able to have animation in the "Related Pages & Posts" pages preview. Supporting animated GIFs seems to be the easiest way to achieve that.

Here are the context and more details, I hope it will help you to find the best technical solution.

The visual concept Williams came up with for these continental GAiN is to have a photo of the event's city, then an image of people from that region-culture, and finally a photograph of nature from that place. Those three photos need to rotate. The same concept will be used on the website, social media, printed materials, etc.
Using the Hero Banner Gallery, I'm implementing it in all four Continental GAiNs pages.

We need your help to find the solution for the "Related Pages" preview.

@YauheniKapliarchuk We need to modify the theme so that when a .GIF is uploaded, the full .GIF is retained in the thumbnail. When we uploaded a .GIF the thumbnail did not have the full .GIF, but the "full size" image did contain it.
