I upgraded from Xubuntu 22.04 to 22.10 today. The upgrade was seamless. Great job by the Xubuntu team.

However, after upgrading, I'm facing some usability issues; especially concerning the panel plugins/applets.

Screenshot_2022-10-21_18-24-23

As you can see from this screenshot, 04 panel plugins in total seem out of place.

Among them blueman-applet, nmapplet and notification-applet aren't following the white-ish icon colors that others have. I've tried changing icon theme and dark/white, but nothing changes them.

The notes-plugin has this yellowish border or something that makes it stand out from the other plugins/applets in a negative way.

These are all usability issues. Please fix them.

Thanks for reporting these issues.

The networking icons are a known issue and are actively being worked on:

As for Bluetooth and notifications, @ochosi may want to take a look.

I've never seen that issue with the notes plugin. I'm not able to reproduce it here. @ochosi, any ideas?

I noticed something interesting.

"Request symbolic icons" was checked in Status Tray Icon panel plugin. And the panel plugins appeared like this.

with Request Symbolic Icons checked

See the inconsistency with nmapplet and blueman-applet?

But when I unchecked the "Request symbolic icons", the look of the icons were consistent. See below:

with Request Symbolic Icons unchecked

Maybe this'll help you guys triage this bug.

N.B. you'll have to overlook the notification-applet as it was in Do Not Disturb mode earlier. So it's a non-issue for this plugin, I guess.

I also have the yellow background issue with the Notes plugin. It can also be seen in this 22.10 review video so others do seem to be experiencing it. Edit: Reported this issue on Xfce Gitlab here.

As for the other tray icons... when selecting the symbolic option, the Status Notifier Plugin icons do toggle to the correct foreground color. The same does not happen when toggling the symbolic option in the Status Tray Plugin, as show above. So this does seem to be specific to the Status Tray Plugin.

And when using symbolic icons on both plugins and switching gtk themes that have light and dark panel (and other icon themes), the Status Notifier does switch to the correct icon color while the Status Tray doesn't. So it does seem to indicate an issue with the Status Tray Plugin (and not theme/icons, etc) not applying the correct foreground color to the icons.

Edit: Looks like the Status Tray issue might have gotten fixed upstream last month, but no new releases since then. I haven't had a chance to try out the current branch, though. Just noticed it looking through the commits.

The notes background issue has been fixed.

That means all issues in this issue have been fixed upstream. Not sure if notes will get a new release in time for Xubuntu 23.04 (may be too late already, not sure). But anyway, at least they're resolved upstream!

Xubuntu 25.04 includes elementary-xfce 0.21 and xfce4-panel 4.20.3. It's safe to say these issues have now been resolved.
