Port of work in SciTools/iris#2607

This won't work until an Iris 2 can be found on conda-forge.

Coverage increased (+0.006%) to 83.689% when pulling b071ebc on pp-mo:eccodes into dbd5123 on SciTools:master.

This works because iris-grib's travis is testing against master (and py 2.7)
