This looks like an awesome and welcome tool.

My windows knowledge is next to nil, but I'm pretty sure ravel-3.10.0.exe is supposed to self-extract and set itself up in some way. Do you have any simple pointers on how to start troubleshooting this? Any way to examine the file and see what it is supposed to do / what subdirectories or other resources it may be looking for?

This error is related to Conty itself. Maybe your conty_lite_dwarfs.sh is corrupted, check its sha256sum and see if it matches the one written on the releases page.

$ sha256sum conty_lite_dwarfs.sh

Also, what Linux distro are you using?

I think there is setup to be done, and I'm just trying to understand what that consists of.

I believe export XDG_DATA_HOME=~/.local/share may be required, and maybe ~/.local/share/keyrings and ~/.local/share/applications.

The error message was in response to running
$ ./conty_lite_dwarfs.sh ~/MINSKY/ravel-3.10.0.exe

Actually I just realized it was clearing the screen, so when run through 'less', I get

conty_lite_dwarfs.sh is the only file I downloaded; I saw not indication that any companion file was needed. I'm totally ignorant about running wine on Linux, and almost as ignorant about windows 10 , so perhaps there are "obvious" assumptions I'm missing -- like certain directories and files being set up in advance, and shell variables indicating where things are -- possibly also a prefix SHELL_VBLS=xxx conty_*.sh needed?

Conty does not work on your system for some reason, which is weird. Is your Ubuntu 24.04 customized somehow? I just tried it on a clean Ubuntu 24.04.1 installation and it works fine after executing:

# sysctl kernel.apparmor_restrict_unprivileged_userns=0

Nothing should be needed except for Conty itself and the aforementioned command.

I get the same result on a Ubuntu 22.04 system I've been using for a long time.

If I run it with no arguments, as ./conty_lite_dwarfs.sh I get the usage message

If I do (on the 22.04 system)
$ ./conty_lite_dwarfs.sh ravel-3.10.0.exe | less

This is strange, i can't say what's the problem here. Looks like there are some differences between our systems. What shell are you using?

$ export | grep "SHELL="

You can try Wine builds from here instead of Conty, especially amd64-wow64 builds.

$ wine-10.0-rc4-amd64-wow64/bin/wine ravel-3.10.0.exe

Thanks. wine-10.0-rc4-staging-amd64-wow64.tar.xz seems to be working. Without "staging" it didn't work. I also haven't been able to get a Ubuntu standard package (using apt) install to do the job.

I think it might help to quickly clear up problems in Conty like what I'm having if it had a verbose or logging mode.

The problem looks like a simple case of something not being where it's expected, or something like that; some kind of single-point failure
