Hey everyone, It's been a while since I've been to a working group meeting. I've left Mozilla and have helped start the Open Metaverse Interoperability Group and W3C Metaverse Interoperability Community Group. As part of this group, we're working on standardizing some of the extensions created by the Mozilla Hubs team and other developers working on extending glTF to add things such as audio, physics, particle emitters, avatar attachment points, and more.
We just voted to start this effort at today's meeting, so things are early. We are set to meet tomorrow at 5PM Pacific to kick off discussion on glTF extension proposals that will enable richer 3D environments, avatars, and other assets for virtual worlds. My intention is to create a space where we can prototype and standardize extensions that would otherwise be outside the scope of most of the developers here. If there are extensions that make sense to bring back into the Khronos 3D Formats Working Group's ratification process, then we would do so. For now, I think it makes sense for us to develop extensions under the OMI vendor prefix.
If you'd like to learn more about what we're up to, I'd encourage you to check out our GitHub and possibly attend one of our weekly meetings on Wednesdays at 9AM Pacific. More details are available here. We'll also figure out a time for a regular glTF extension specific meeting.
