Hi, I came across the word 給うた and it is the past tense of 給う but when I hover over 給うた, I see

In the VN I was reading, they read 給うた as たもうた,

I'm not sure if たまう is also read as たまうた

Original sentence: 「天におわす神よ、この地を作り給うた天使よ、今日の安寧を心より感謝致します」

Looking it up, a Japanese native says: https://detail.chiebukuro.yahoo.co.jp/qa/question_detail/q1229694727

「給う」の過去形は「給うた」です。

Also, interestingly https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%E3%81%9F#Etymology_2

In Standard Japanese the -ta form of 行く (iku, “to go”) is 行った (itta), and the -ta form of 問う (tou, “to ask”) and 請う (kou, “to beg”) follows the Kansai forms, 問うた (tōta) and 請うた (kōta).

問う and 請う also follow this pattern.

More info on kansai: http://www.kansaiben.com/3.BasicGrammar/1a.Verb/2.Grammar/3G.html

To sum up, if the うverb ending with う is…

  1. -a-う, then the たform is –o-うた (e.g. かう→こう た)
  2. -o-う, then the たform is –o-うた (e.g. よう→ようた)
  3. -u-う, then the たform is –u-うた (e.g. すう→すう た)

Hovering over 問うた I see it properly parsed by yomichan

and hovering over 請うた is also properly parsed by yomichan

But if you write 問った or 請った

It parses it as "past" which is incorrect.

This also applies for て form: https://www.reddit.com/r/LearnJapanese/comments/3e4buq/%E5%95%8F%E3%81%86%E3%81%A6form/

http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~QM4H-IIM/ktb019.htm

I've also seen 問う as 問うて in my immersion:

「だから、たまにここに来て己の意味を問うてみるのだ」

which is correctly parsed by yomichan:

But 問って is incorrect

But yomichan will still parse it as て form

問うている is the correct form of the verb 問う.

問っている is an incorrect conjugation. You can't write it like this because it doesn't make sense. People might wonder if you have converted Hiragana とっている in a wrong way when you meant to write 取っている、撮っている、採っている、捕っている、etc.

I just talked to some Japanese native friends and they say that 問うている is correct, and 問っている is incorrect, but becoming more correct. They say that Yomichan should recognize both 問うている and 問っている, but 問っている should mention that this is uncommon

TLDR Suggestions:

  1. 給うた should be recognizable by Yomichan as past form (BUG)
  2. 給うて should be recognizable by Yomicahn as te form (BUG)
  3. 問っている should still say て form, but should say it is uncommon
  4. 問った should still say past form, but should say it is uncommon
