I couldn't reproduce this on the emulator, but it's reproducible on a physical device. This is a browser limitation for mobile Safari. Apple blocks any programmatic focus that was not invoked in response to a user gesture.

Not sure if there is anything that we can do here.

You're right and there's nothing that can be done. My opinion is, we should close this one.
