Background

The library we currently use for sorting has the following limitations:

  • Support has been lacking for it recently
  • It supports native drag and drop on desktop browsers but falls back to non native on mobile devices
  • It doesn't support web components very well
  • It requires sortable elements to be direct children of the parent

Blocked issues: #10572, #9262

Desired Outcome

Discover and choose a new sorting library to handle sorting between lists.

Potential candidates:

Currently, seems like formkit dnd is the best (has shadowDOM support)

I think we can proceed with prototyping formkit drag and drop. I couldn't find anything else that is framework agnostic and supports shadowDOM.
