Description

This was reported in 8832593-zd-a8c.

Watch app won’t finish a refresh and is crashing consistently. Unable to play from watch disconnected from phone for more than a minute without a crash

A crash can also be reproduced consistently by tapping Refresh Data.

Step-by-step reproduction instructions

I can reproduce this with watchOS 10.6.1.

  1. Go to Play Source in the watch app.
  2. Select Watch.
  3. Tap the Refresh Data button.

#8832027-zen:

  • App Version: 7.73
  • Device: iPhone13,3
  • iOS: 18.0
  • watchOS: 10.6.1

They have a Series 4 watch, so they can't update to watchOS 11.

Another report in 8852109-zd-a8c

The latest Apple Watch version is having problems:
1). It randomly stops and boots me out of the app while listening.
2). If I am listening to a podcast but use my watch to go to another app, Pocket Casts stops playing.
3). Oftentimes when starting, I get the buffering icon or notification, but I am playing an episode that has been downloaded - there should be no buffering.

I hope you’re having a great day! Unfortunately I’m having trouble with the Pocket Casts watch app since the watchOS 10.6.1 update. The app doesn’t show any of my podcasts in “watch” mode and it continually crashes.
I tried:

  • restarting both devices
  • signing out and into the pocket casts account
  • reinstalling the watch and the iphone apps
  • unlinking the watch, factory resetting it, and pairing it as a completely new watch (not restoring it from backup)

iPhone 14 Pro running iOS 18.1, Apple Watch Series 5 with cellular data, running watchOS 10.6.1 (it’s too old to run watchOS 11), Pocket Casts 7.76.1.0.
I almost always play from the iPhone app, and in that case almost always use the watch app as a remote control for the iPhone player. (I sure wish the Audible and Tidal apps also worked this way, you guys really nailed the remote control functionality in the watch app!!!). Sometimes I play to the iPhone speaker, but most often to AirPods 3rd gen or AirPods Pro 2nd gen, or AirPlay speakers (Apple AirPort Express). Speaker selection doesn’t seem to affect stability. Sometimes I play from the watch app to AirPods, if I don’t want to carry the phone around with me.
The problem began at least a month ago, before I upgraded to iOS 18, and updates to pocket casts haven’t helped.
The watch app runs sometimes without problems, but it usually crashes, usually requiring 3 starts to finally bring it up (see attached video). Trying to get the watch app to play directly to AirPods is even worse (several crashes just to bring it to the watch player, then it’s not sync’d to what the phone was playing, and it struggles to connect to AirPods.) Everything used to work fine, the problems started after updating pocket casts while still running iOS 17, but at the time when iOS 18 became available. I’m assuming you made some changes to the app to better support iOS 18 and watchOS 11, but broke some things for watchOS 10 in the process.
I’ve tried power cycling and reinstalling the app on the phone and watch, same problems.
