Task Description

Determine whether the breadcrumb should follow a Location-based, Path-based, or hybrid approach. This will involve researching best practices from sources like the Carbon Design System and other well-known guidelines.

User Story:
As a Silva user,
I want a breadcrumb that clearly reflects my current position and navigation path,
So that I can easily understand where I am and quickly navigate back without confusion.

Acceptance Criteria:

  • Research breadcrumb best practices (Carbon Design System and others).
  • Compare Location-based vs. Path-based approaches.
  • Present a recommendation to the team.
  • Document the team's decision.
  • Apply the chosen standard to the figma flow.

Two ways of working with breadcrumb have been documented and we will discuss at dev coolab which way Silva will work (product decision)

I presented three ways to use the breadcrumb, and the team voted for the hierarchical approach. However, they pointed out that integrating the silviculture search would be challenging because it mixes path-based and hierarchical breadcrumbs.

To address this, they suggested two possible solutions:

  1. Adding a back button.
  2. Opening an external tab with the Opening ID.

Decision - Figma file
We will open a new tab to display the Opening ID when the user clicks on it, and the designer will include this task in a future usability test.
